Are you ready to embark on your sourdough baking journey with the Sourdough Club? Before you can create your first mouthwatering loaf, it's important to gather the essential supplies to ensure success. Here's a comprehensive list of recommended supplies to kickstart your sourdough adventure:
1. Dutch Oven:
Required for Baking: Your trusty Dutch oven will be the vessel where the magic happens. It's crucial for achieving that perfect, crusty artisanal bread.
I have a Le Creuset (and love it!) but I know a few people who have the Martha Stewart one, and recommend it.
• Option 1: Le Creuset
• Option 2: Martha Stewart - beautiful!
• Option 2: Over 8,500 reviews - with a 4.7 star rating!
2. Mason Jars (or Any Other Jars):
For Starter Storage: You'll need these for storing your sourdough starter, a living culture that's the heart of your bread-making journey. I have 3 wide mouth mason jars that I rotate between. I would recommend having a couple so that you can transfer to one while the other one is washed. You can use any large jars you have around the house if you’re trying to be resourceful! I do not recommend a regular sized mason jar because the starter will grow out of it.
• Option that is specifically for Sourdoughing
3. Bread Flour:
An Essential Ingredient: High-quality bread flour is essential for developing the structure and texture of your sourdough loaves.
4. Rye Flour:
Highly Recommended, Not Required: While not mandatory, adding some rye flour to your repertoire can introduce unique flavors and characteristics to your sourdough creations. The starter really benefits from the inclusion of rye flour, and you can experiment with a mix of all-purpose and rye flour for your recipes.
• The rye flour I use and love!
5. All-Purpose Flour:
Versatile and Handy: All-purpose flour complements your bread flour, offering flexibility in your sourdough recipes.
• Here's the brand I like but any will do!
6. Sea Salt:
Flavor Enhancer: Enhance the taste of your bread with a touch of sea salt. It's a must-have for seasoning your loaves.
• Sea salt I use in all my loaves!
7. Scale:
Precision is Key: A reliable kitchen scale is crucial for accurately measuring ingredients, ensuring consistency in your recipes. I actually have two scales! One larger one and a smaller one - if you're going to get just one, go with the larger one!
• Kitchen scale - perfect size for baking
• This is the first one I had, but over time I got annoyed with how little it was, so got the one above - but a good option if you're on a budget.
8. Dough Bowl:
Perfect for Mixing: A spacious and sturdy dough bowl is ideal for mixing and fermenting your sourdough dough.
• Some cute kitchen mixing bowls (but any mixing bowls will work!)
• Another cute option - these are the ones I have (you can see it in the pic at the top of the post)
9. Bread Bowl:
Shaping and Proofing: A specialized bread bowl or banneton is excellent for shaping and proofing your dough, helping it achieve that characteristic shape.
• I like this option because it has two sizes.
10. Dough Wisk:
Efficient Mixing: A dough whisk, also known as a Danish dough whisk or bread whisk, is a fantastic tool for efficiently mixing your sourdough ingredients. Its unique design makes it easier to incorporate flour and water, ensuring a well-mixed dough.
• Not required but I definitely recommend!
11. Parchment Paper:
Baking Convenience: Parchment paper makes transferring your shaped dough into the Dutch oven a breeze, preventing sticking and simplifying cleanup.
12. Bread Knife:
For Precise Slicing: A good bread knife ensures clean, even slices of your homemade sourdough loaves, making them perfect for sandwiches or toast. A few of my sourdough friends have bought knives just for bread cutting - if you need one, here are some options!
• This is the one I have, VERY good quality knife brand.
• More budget friendly option.
• I've seen a lot of this kind of knife on "legit" sourdough pages - love the vibe!
13. Bread Scorer:
Artistic Touch: A bread scorer allows you to create beautiful patterns on the surface of your loaves, not only enhancing their appearance but also helping control their rise during baking. If you're going to be a frequent sourdough baker, having a scorer definitely makes scoring easier and more consistent.
• I recently bought this one (it's cute too!).
14. Storage Bag:
For Freshness: Keep your homemade sourdough bread fresh for longer by storing it in a proper bread storage bag. It helps maintain its crustiness and flavor.
• I use this one so that I can wash it when needed!
• These are super cute - I might have to buy them in the future.
• A modern bread box! Comes with a bag and is so cute.
15. Bottle Brush:
For Easy Cleaning: Sourdough starter is very sticky and is hard to clean off your jars, mixing bowls and utensils. I recommend using a bottle brush to get the starter off your kitchen supplies. Below is the one I use - it's aesthetically pleasing and also has a replaceable brush head, which I replace instead of replacing the entire brush. Better for the environment and pretty - the best of both worlds ;)
